DUTIES OF THE CHIEF ENGINEER

  • C/Eng shall ensure Safety and Environmental-Protection Policy is implemented in his department
  • Shall discuss related issues in Safety Committee Meetings.
  • To help the Master fully in all matters related to shipboard labour management and operation of the ship.
  • To prepare C/E Standing Order and Night Order (when applicable) and ensure full compliance by all engine watch-keepers.
  • To lead and supervise subordinates, administer duties of the Engine Department, and ensure that all the personnel in the department thoroughly understand orders, rules and notifications, and obey them
  • Assume responsibility for operation and maintenance of machinery and other equipment under the responsibility of the Engine Department. This includes responsibilities for the maintenance of electrical fittings in hazardous areas and explosive-rated fittings.
  • Give instructions for operation in the Engine Room personally if necessary, during engine operation, trials, or when a deficiency is detected in the engine
  • Assume responsibility for maintenance of machinery in the engine room and other spaces in the responsibility of the Engine Department, and responsibility for managing fuel oil and lubricating oil
  • Make efforts to load more cargo and increase operating efficiency through rational replenishment and use of fuel oil and lubricating oil.
  • Personally supervise the bunkering operation 
  • Take measures to prevent air pollution and marine pollution when carrying out various tasks.
  • Understand the condition of the engine, perform opening-up inspections of various parts of the engine and check parts correctly.
  • Pay particular attention to the accuracy of measuring instruments
  • Personally supervise opening-up or repairs of important part of the engine.
  • Receive prior permission from the Master if the maintenance work is likely to impede operations of the ship.
  • Guide subordinates, and evaluate their performance according to separately prescribed procedures.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the duties of subordinates, administer jobs of the Engine Department, and allocate work appropriately, and co-operate with other departments.
  • Offer guidance and educate subordinates
  • Ensure that oils and combustible gases in the engine room are handled carefully, and take measures to prevent fires and explosions.
  • Manage matters related to safety and health in the Engine Department.
  • Replenish and maintain special ship's stores for the Engine Department, and prepare related documents and reports.
  • Offer advice on determining work items on board the ship and formation of teams, and offer work guidance.
  • Maintain important documents, drawings and other records under the responsibility of the Engine Department in safe custody.
  • Prepare engine log abstracts and other related document.
  • Report items that are important to the Engine Department to the Master without delay.
  • Assist Superintendent in dry-docking process/proceeding specification and send to the office
